Monday Mantra: Lean Back

Am I really going to throw it back to Fat Joe in today’s Monday Mantra? Hell yeah. Lean back. 

Okay, so this might not be your jam, and you can absolutely skip over the video, but when I thought about the topic for this week, this song that I loved in my teen years popped into my head and wouldn’t leave. So naturally, I had to share. And more importantly, in the spirit of being light-hearted, I figure, we can all use a good throw back every now and then. So, if you’re into it, here it is.

But now with that aside, let’s get down to it. This week’s mantra focuses on the notion that if we were to lean back, just a little bit, we’re likely to learn a lot.

One of the first things I have to remind myself when I enter a seated position for meditation is to readjust my weight, chest, and head back in line with my hips. Every time I sit I instantly lean forward. I do the same when I walk. And it’s not just me. Even as a yoga teacher I find myself having to remind my students to lean back into their postures instead of forward.

It’s natural. It’s what we do. Think ahead. Plan ahead. Worry about what’s to come and try to control it.

Lean back is not a new notion. We know it. Being in the present is our key. But dang is it hard to do. So this week, when you see yourself tripping into the future, worrying about what’s to come, putting the cart before the horse—allow this mantra to pop into your head. Lean back. You can learn a lot when you’re right here, right now.

Lean back.
